RESEARCH AND PEDAGOGY AT PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS [View Schedule of all Events]
Room: Sheraton Ballroom 1
Organizers: Elaine Reynolds, Lafayette College, Easton, PA;
Beverly Clendening, Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY;
Karen Hales, Davidson College, NC; and
Nancy Pokrywka, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY

Summary: The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for the diverse community of Drosophila researchers interested in undergraduate research and pedagogy. The first hour will be presentations by undergraduate researchers. The second hour, we will break into three discussion groups facilitated by one of the organizers. One group will focus on pedagogy and ways of collecting and communicating pedagogical ideas. The second will focus on preparing for and obtaining a job at a PUI. The third group will be comprised of participants already in PUI positions to discuss institutional and extramural support for undergraduate research.

RNA PROCESSING [View Schedule of all Events]
Room: Sheraton Ballroom 2
Organizers: David Standiford, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia;
and Mary Beth Davis, Bryn Mawr College, PA

Summary: This workshop provides a unique opportunity for the fly labs working on RNA processing, localization and editing as well as those now studying RNAi and micro-RNAs to meet and communicate in an informal setting.

ECDYSONE ACTION
Room: Sheraton Ballroom 3
Organizer: Laurence von Kalm, University of Central Florida, Orlando

Summary: The workshop will focus on the role of ecdysteroids in development. Topics to be covered include molecular analysis of transcriptional regulators in the ecdysone response, tissue-specific responses to ecdysone, regulation of ecdysteroid biosynthesis, and technical advances of interest to researchers in the field.

RELEASE 3 RE-ANNOTATED D. MELANOGASTER GENOME [View Schedule of all Events]
Room: Sheraton Ballroom 4-5
Organizers: Madeline Crosby, FlyBase, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; and
Sima Misra, FlyBase/BDGP, University of California, Berkeley

Summary: The recent completion of the Drosophila melanogaster genomic sequence to high quality and the availability of a greatly expanded set of Drosophila cDNA sequences have allowed FlyBase and the Berkeley Drosophila Genome Project to re-annotate the genome. This workshop will describe the results of this systematic analysis as well as tools for researchers to access the data.

HEMATOPOIESIS AND IMMUNITY [View Schedule of all Events]
Room: Chicago Ballroom 8
Organizer: Shubha Govind, City University of New York, NY

Summary: As in the past years, presentations in this workshop will focus on the effector cell types and molecules as well as on the regulatory mechanisms that govern humoral and cellular immune responses in Drosophila. Topics relating to host pathogen interactions and Drosophila hematopoiesis also will be discussed.
