Notch (N) activation at the dorsoventral (DV) boundary of the Drosophila eye is essential for the growth of the organ. However, the identity of the downstream effector remains unknown. Here we characterize a Drosophila gene, Lobe (L), which mediates the proliferative effect of N signaling in the ventral domain independently from the dorsal growth.
